As any good golfer will realize that to be consistent in your game you have to be consistent in your swing. And to be consistent in your swing you have to have a good golf swing tempo. Whatever the speed of your swing it must have rhythm and balance.
The speed of the tempo is irrelevant, it can be slow or fast, but what matters is the consistency and the smoothness of it. Some take a metronome with them when they practice, whilst others go with whatever the latest gadget on the market is that has been designed to help. Most of the time the problem that a golfer is having with his swing is that he is trying to swing his club too fast and too hard. This might sound like a tough generalization but it is true, well at some point of a golfer’s career. It is applying the logic that the faster you swing a club the harder you will hit the ball and consequently the further it will travel. The theory of this is sound, but you do not need all the power and speed throughout the swing, only when it comes into contact with the golf ball.
Think about it, you could be swinging in slow motion for your entire back-swing. And you can continue swinging in slow motion for the beginning of your downswing. The only time you need be at full speed is right at the moment of impact with the ball.Knowing that you only need to reach maximum power on your swing at the point of impact you can work on the rest of your swing. If you try to accelerate too hard through your swing you will lose your balance and accuracy. The aim should be for a smooth and gradual acceleration throughout the down-swing.
Have you ever studied the swing of a top golf player, it appears effortless. They have such a good tempo to their swing the whole process seems smooth and under control. The club speed at impact is exactly right and no effort has been wasted with an over-swing.
If you want to attain a smooth, controlled golf swing there is nothing better than going to your local driving range and just practicing over and over again hitting balls. At the start it does not really matter where the balls go as you are just trying to attain a good tempo. Once you have mastered that, then start to think about direction and distance.
