“Stenson was two shots off the lead and Tiger (Woods) was in the group behind him. Everyone was following Tiger, so I wanted to get ahead of him and maybe shoot something different. “I didn’t know Stenson was going to take his clothes off. I thought he was just joking around, playing it up for the gallery. Then he took his shirt off and I thought this could be something big. Then he took his pants off. And everyone was laughing. And he was talking to me because I was the only photographer there and he was saying, ‘Come on, man, don’t take these pictures.’ He was playing with Ryuji Imada and Ben Curtis and they were egging me on to take the photos. I took about 16 photos.”

“To write a great story you have to start by having a winner somebody has ever heard of. The more famous the player the more stature it gives the event. It’s much easier to write about Jack Nicklaus (Golf Tips From Jack Nicklaus) than it is to write about somebody you’ve never heard of. It’s easier to write about Tiger (Woods).
“We don’t root for people, we root for journalism. We root for stories. When you wrote for Sports Illustrated, you had to absorb the tournament for three or four days and on Sunday night, you were on deadline and you had to tell a story. Every day was important — but there was always a defining moment. And then you kick that defining moment to death. That takes some experience. And it takes experience to leave things out. You run across marvelous and hilarious anecdotes but if they don’t follow the theme of the story, you file them away and use them some other time.
“I grew up in Texas and I grew up with golf and college football — those were the two most important things because of Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson and Jimmy Demaret and Lee Trevino. If you don’t like golf and college football as a kid, they drown you. I like both of them equally. Golf is really fun and it’s beautiful and it’s classy and it’s elegant — but college football is important. People live and die with college football.”
Shooting a Tiger
Photographer Fred Vuich took two memorable pictures of Tiger Woods — one of him hitting out of a fairway bunker surrounded by fans during the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, and a cover shot of Woods hitting his tee shot on the 18th hole at Augusta National during the 2001 Masters.
“Luck plays a lot into getting a great shot. The picture of Tiger out of the bunker — Robert (Beck) was in the spot I preferred to be in. I got there late so I took a spot opposite Beck. And my angle turned out better.
“The picture of Tiger at Augusta was planned from Wednesday. So we planned on using a special camera. It was before digital. I was shocked to see the photo on the cover of the magazine. That it got the kind of shelf life that it has. The Tiger cover was one frame. It was a camera without a motor drive. It was manual focus and it was one frame.”

Therefore when you are picking out a golf club, you should be very happy with the grip. If you aren’t fully satisfied, you can replace the grip. On historic East Lake Golf Club’s last nine holes, with countless playoff scenarios in play and enough mind-boggling numbers crunching to make any accountant’s head spin, six players had legitimate chances of winning the playoffs’ grand prize of $10 million.
After the first two FedExCup playoffs finished with a thud — Woods and Vijay Singh had the titles basically wrapped up before the first tee shot of the tournament —- the third FedExCup delivered tension, excitement and possibility. It also delivered the game’s two biggest stars to the trophy presentation.
At one time or another in the final round, Woods, Perry and Steve Stricker were leading the projected points race for the $10 million. Mickelson wound up second — good for a $3 million bonus — but was just concentrating on winning The Tour Championship.
“I want to see if I understand this right. I shot 65, and Tiger shot 70. He gets a check for $10 million?” joked Mickelson, who led the tournament with 20 birdies and had 36 one-putt greens. “I didn’t play well the first three FedExCup events. I don’t deserve to win the entire FedExCup just based on one tournament win. But boy, today was a lot of fun. I played one of the better rounds I played all year.”
Woods, who has six wins this year, has played better rounds. Frustrated by the greens all tournament, he didn’t make a charge until birdies on 15 and 16. By then, he needed to finish with two more birdies and a bogey from Mickelson on the final hole.
“I’m a little disappointed I didn’t win the (Tour) Championship because I was right there,” said Woods, who had 117 putts, 10 more than Mickelson. “But to win the FedExCup and to be as consistent as I have been all year is something that I’m very proud of.
“There were so many unknowns at the beginning of the season, and to play as consistently as I have — I think I have nine top-twos this year — I certainly wouldn’t have expected that going into my first event, the (Accenture) Match Play, to end up where I’m at right now. I’m very proud of that and proud of what Hank has done and my trainers to get me to this point.”
Still, the feeling wasn’t quite the same as it was when he won the inaugural FedExCup in 2007. Back then, he won The Tour Championship by eight.
“It feels certainly not like it did a couple years ago when I won the tournament,” said Woods, who also won $810,000 for finishing second in The Tour Championship to go with his $10 million bonus. “So yeah, that felt a little bit better than it did today. I hit the ball well enough to make a few more birdies, and I just didn’t make any putts this week from about 10 to 20 feet. I missed a lot of putts.”

Downswing is where one will really see the results of perfect stance, alignment, backswing and grip. It happens extremely quickly and requires that you move fluidly with power. The 3 phases are shift, rotate and hit. You have to shift the lower body, rotate the upper body and at the point of contact, if the first 2 phases went flawlessly, you will be set up for an accurate shot.
During the backswing tension is built up and with the downswing you get to release all of that. If you are in the correct stance at the top of your back swing, your body will naturally start to unwind; releasing the club, striking the ball and you’ll end with a balanced follow through.
Useful tips
• Grip the club properly at all times. Incorrect gripping of the club will result in shots not ending the way you want them too. If you your grip on the club is too weak, the ball will curve and this can be avoided. Perfect your grip and be neutral. Choose a golf grip that feels comfortable to you – experts can advise which ones to use, but you are the one who needs to feel comfortable while taking the shot.
• Check that your stance is correct but comfortable. Your feet should be shoulder width apart and align your shoulders with your target, keeping your elbows completely relaxed.
• Aim to keep the angle in your right wrist for as long as you can during the downswing. This is incredibly important. Look at the professionals and notice how their forearms are angled away from the shaft to allow max compression onto the ball.
• Start the swing with coordinated movements by the shoulders, hands and arms – if your stance is correct, this shouldn’t be difficult. If it seems like an impossible task, take a look at your stance and look for mistakes. During a good shot, the line of back swing and downswing are almost exactly the same, so you must move the club away from the ball correctly for the first 1-2 feet.
• Position your head correctly. Your aim is to hit the front of the ball squarely and not the top, therefore your head placement should be slightly behind the ball before impact.
• Focus on keeping your hands forward on the golf shaft and your club head should be down during downswing.
• Don’t forget to keep the mechanics of golf swing in mind when practicing. Timing plays a very big role in perfecting your swing. When you are doing everything right, but your shots are still not great, take a look at the timing.
