Golf Tips a Beginner Must Know

Are you interested in golfing? If you are interested in the game and you are planning to start playing it. Then here are a few golf tips beginner must know.

One, you have to the right stance. This is very important when it comes to swinging your club. This is the solid base that you are going to rotate from and is the core of your swing. Having the right stance will give you a solid foundation upon which your swing is constructed.  This will also help you maintain balance when swinging. If you are unbalanced, this will lead to an irregular and uneven swing. This will lead to you having difficulty in hitting good long straight shots.

A good stance is when your feet should be shoulder width apart. But, you can also have them slightly closer or wider apart depending on your preference. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable. The ball should be in line with the middle of your feet. And, place the club behind the ball. This is the basic structure of the stance.

Two, you will need to buy the right set of equipment. If you are just beginning with the game, do not buy an expensive and fancy golf set. You might end up buying the wrong set of equipment for you. Many people always have the wrong impression that they must have 14 clubs all the time. But, this is not true because 14 is just the maximum amount of clubs that people are allowed to have especially in golf competition. And, for people who are starting out, fewer clubs are usually better.

Golfers usually need to have wood clubs in their bags. There are different types of wood clubs. There are the driver, the 3-wood club and the 5-wood club. So, you have to be able to determine, which club you can hit the best out of the three. You also have to determine what long iron club that you can hit best with. There are usually 3-6 types of irons.

Similar with the wood club, you also have to choose one that suits you.  You also have to choose between the 7-9 short iron clubs. After choosing clubs that suits you, discard the other clubs from your bags and just play with clubs that you can hit best with. And, you need wedges and a putter for your set.

And lastly, golf tips for beginners must know is that they have to take lessons from a professional and then practice what you have learned. You must bear in mind that it will take many lessons and practice for you to be able to hit just one club well in your golf club. For beginners, fewer clubs are better because it means fewer clubs to learn. More clubs usually takes a long time to learn and this can be quite frustrating.

In addition, good golf tips beginner includes instructional videos as well.

The Effect of Alcohol Upon Your Golf

July 21, 2009 by admin

It can be interesting to see what effect alcohol can have upon your golf game. The impact varies from one individual to another.

How long is a piece of string? I have a friend who plays off a handicap of five and swears by two and three quarter pints at lunchtime whenever he’s in a 36 hole competition – and generally shoots a sub-par round when adhering to this regime. I’m not sure how it would affect my game, but doubt it would create such a positive result.

What happens to your golf when you’ve been out and had a bit (or a lot) too much the night before? I remember dropping off someone one morning for a Sunday round at 8am and seeing another gentleman attempting to step out of the passenger seat of the car, wobbling a bit, and nearly falling into the trunk as he tried to lift out his clubs. I later discovered he only lasted half the round before having to walk in. What a shame to ruin what should be a nice relaxing morning playing golf with your mates simply because of drinking to such an excess you no longer know your own name. We have all seen similar spectacles I’m sure.

How does alcohol affect your golf? The answer is that it depends on the person. Are you the sort of person who gets happy, relaxed and comfortable when drinking? Or are you the type of person who gets morose? Or angry? We are all unique and individual and you play golf from the platform of you, the person. Most people find that one or two drinks will relax them, and more will have a rather different effect.

If you are the type of person who is so laid back that you are almost horizontal, to have a couple of drinks and relax further will probably mean that you will lose your focus, lose your attention and your golf will suffer. If, on the other hand, you are a slightly anxious person, one or two drinks are likely to relax you and rub off the edge of anxiety and allow you to focus clearly and pay attention to the task in hand; hence your golf will benefit.

To play your best golf an optimum level of arousal is required. If you are too relaxed, attention and focus will fade, and if you are too aroused your logical, thinking part of the brain is bypassed and your ability to make good strategy decisions will be temporarily put on hold. Over-arousal in effect makes you “stupid” – you cannot think straight; you cannot think logically and clearly.

It is a known and proven fact that when you get angry or when you get over aroused, this clouds your judgment and makes you more likely to react with only your lower brain functions – it denies access to higher brain functions – it inhibits the cortical regions of the brain, and so problem solving is hampered, reaction speeds and co-ordination are impaired, and you cannot think as clearly. Thus decisions are less effective, listening skills are impaired, and creativity is obstructed. Not the best recipe for good golf.

Any exaggerated emotional state (which of course alcohol induces) is accompanied by physiological and biological changes – your heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, adrenaline is secreted at a greater level. Not very helpful when you are trying to play a game which requires a state of relaxed concentration in order to be able to put your best swing on the golf ball.

And if that isn’t enough your ability to learn is also affected by exaggerated emotional states. Our emotional state is critical to what we learn and how well we recall and apply what we have learned. The amygdale in the emotional brain can hijack the intellectual processes when over-arousal is experienced.

Effectively, too much alcohol can trigger hormones which induce tension and anxiety, bad decisions, unclear planning, jerky movements, and rushed tempo; you simply cannot think clearly. And everything in life starts with a thought, including your golf. You have to think clearly, make good strategy decisions, you have to be creative and see the shot you plan to make; and after you have made these decisions you need to execute the planned shot, which requires relaxed muscles, good hand-eye co-ordination, and good co-ordination in general and, of course, good balance and a feeling of groundedness.

What are the chances of this combination of requirements when you have been on a bender the night before? The outcome will vary from one person to another. Some people find that their golf improves with alcohol, their co-ordination is better, their focus clearer and the result far more pleasing – their slice miraculously disappears and they sink every putt; This may be due to the fact that they simply don’t care, that they feel so ill and hung over they want to get every shot out of the way as quickly as possible so that they can go home and nurse their sore head on the sofa (or get into the 19th and have a hair of the dog!). If you are the sort of person who thinks and worries too much about their golf, alcohol may have this effect on you – making you “get out of your own way” and just hit the ball.

If, on the other hand, you are generally a calm, focused and positive thinking golfer, alcohol will hi-jack your logical thought process and reduce your ability to make good shot choices whilst on the course.

In summary, alcohol consumption will affect each person’s golf in a different way from the mental perspective. For some, it will help (in small quantities), whilst for others it will inhibit. In large quantities, very few people are positively affected. From a physical, mechanical perspective, lack of co-ordination and a problem with balance are never going to help anyone’s game of golf!

Best to save the alcohol for the 19th, unless you know yourself well enough to be sure that it will have a positive effect.

Why Not The Pro?

July 19, 2009 by admin

Every program on the golf channel and every article in any golf magazine ends by saying: “Go see your PGA professional for assistance with this idea.” This means go $pend money and time to $upport your local pro.

Now the local pro is a nice person who cares about golf. I consider two of them my own friends. Still I have never taken a lesson, and many of you won’t either. Why?

First on the list is co$t. A single lesson is not going to cost that much. Yes, but most of us don’t have such a narrow focus on our problem and don’t take coaching so well that one lesson is going to solve our problem.

The question becomes how many lessons will it take to really improve your game? How much money ($) are you committing to this idea with no idea what the outcome will be? With that comes the commitment to attend all those lessons and to work on the pro’s suggestions during your time between sessions.

Where is that additional time going to come from? Are you really going to follow through? How good are you at taking coaching? Did you enjoy gym class? Did you participate in organized sports? Is this going to be fun or is it going to be more like going back to school?

One thing you’re going to have to understand is the pro is being paid to stand there. They are going to try to give you your money$ worth. They will toss out one correction after another almost as fast as you can think. It is difficult to make one or two swings with one thought in mind and then have a new one thrown out. One or two swings later and a third and fourth thought are added. Now what was that first thought again.

After a half hour you’ll wonder what is it I am trying to do? Do you like many people want one or two ideas and then time to practice with those before trying to add more changes?

Next on the list is embarrassment. Even in private lessons, do you really want to face the pro and display how little progress you’re making? Did you watch the Haney Project with Charles Barkley on the golf channel? It takes a lot of courage to let others see you struggle. How about in group lessons? We are amateurs, but we still have our pride.

Time to practice is difficult for most of us to find. With a set lesson schedule already taking time, when are you going to find time to practice what the pro has shown you? Have you ever watched children trying to learn to play a musical instrument. Mom has to force practice time, who is going to do that for you?

Which swing are you going to learn? On tour most pros look very similar. The odd player like John Daly or Jim Furyk is easy to spot. The traditional golf swing is very complex and takes quite a while to learn. These people have constant coaching and tons of practice time. Is this really the swing you need to model? PGA pros learn a single swing and a single teaching method. Is this the right one for you?

There are many alternate swing philosophies and mechanics. Some are being explored by the pros and being taught by individual instructors. How are you going to find a useful method and instruction?

Unless you happen to live next to a very flexible pro, you are going to have to learn from books, videos, and swing aides. Unless you enjoy spending hours in classes and on the range, you are going to have to learn by practicing at home and then developing your swing on the golf course. I have always preferred to spend my time playing while I practiced swing improvements.

Fortunately almost any proven method will help improve your swing and score as long as you practice it frequently. Choose something you can work on at home and that only takes a few minutes at a time. Repeat the method until it feels natural. Now step out on the course and just enjoy any improvement you see. When you go back home continue to read, watch video, and practice. You will improve with every trip you make to the golf course.

Remember don’t try to make the whole book or video real in one session. The golf swing is complex. If you try to master the whole thing at once, you will frustrate yourself. Have patience and enjoy this great game. For suggestions about books, videos, and swing aides see my web site. Tiger Woods and the Green Jacket Mystique

July 18, 2009 by admin

The media’s buildup to the Masters has begun, and Tiger Woods was asked Friday after his second round of Bay Hill about the mystique of owning one of the most unique prizes in sports: the Green Jacket. He has four of them, but hasn’t won at Augusta National since 2005. Here’s his exhange with reporters:

Q. I just wondered if you could tell a good green jacket story. I mean, there was that story about how you fell asleep with it on or holding it, and I’m just trying to get a sense of –

TIGER WOODS: I didn’t fall asleep.

Q. Passed out?

TIGER WOODS: Thank you (laughter).

Q. For example, did you know when you won that you were allowed to take the jacket home with you for the year?

TIGER WOODS: Uh-huh.

Q. And what exactly did happen?

TIGER WOODS: Well, I remember the guys who have won, they’ve always said the jacket shrinks over the years. I don’t know if it actually shrinks. Golf clubs are vital for this and I have better one. Guys just might fill out a little bit more (laughter). So yeah, my jacket is just a touch big.

Q. It still is?

TIGER WOODS: Still is, yeah, still is a little bit big. It always feels good to put it on, even though it is a touch big.

Q. It’s a 46L if I remember?

TIGER WOODS: No, it’s 44L.

Q. When you go back to the club, the last time you do or whatever, beyond Masters week, do you have it on then?

TIGER WOODS: No, I would never wear it. The only time we wear it is for the champions’ dinner. Even if I win the tournament and I have it home in my closet, I never put it on.

Q. Has it been outside your house ever, either in ’97, ’01, ’02, ’05?

TIGER WOODS: No, it’s just kind of nice to wake up in the morning, put your clothes on and see this green jacket sitting there and then off you go to start your day.

Q. I know it’s a simple explanation, but why does it have such a mystique of all the trophies you get in golf with your golf equipment?

TIGER WOODS: I think it’s just so different. As champions you get the clubhouse trophy with everyone’s signature on it, which is pretty cool. But I think it’s just the history of it, just that everyone has worn a green jacket, and you go in that locker room — I think that’s it more than anything. It’s more symbolic than anything else. But being able to go into that locker room and to hang out when Mr. Nelson was alive and Mr. Sarazen was alive, Mr. Snead, to be able to hang out with those guys and have them tell you story after story after story.

I remember my first champions’ dinner, I’m hosting it in ’98, and I’m sitting next to Ben Crenshaw and Mr. Nelson. So we start talking about how you hold a club and blah blah blah. At the time I was changing my grip a little bit, and Mr. Nelson says, “This is how I hold it.” We have knives out. “This is how I hold it. Back in 1934 I changed it to this,” and I’m thinking, ’34, that’s a long time ago. And Ben says, “No, you’ve got to hold it like a dove” and the whole deal and the feel and the flow. He’s got a knife in his hand. That was pretty neat.

To me that’s more special than anything else, to be able to go into the champions’ locker room and the champions’ dinner, to hear the stories of a bygone era.

Keeping Your Confidence High Whilst Learning to Play Golf – Part 1

July 17, 2009 by admin

Learning a new skill in life can seem very daunting no matter what that skill is. Golf can seem very complicated, and any budding golfer can suffer from information overload. It is so easy to get tied up in knots thinking about grip, stance and alignment, setup and ball position, tempo and balance, and so on. The club can begin to feel like an octopus in your hands…and it’s far too easy to not be able to see the wood for the trees; so let us just examine the basics of the game.

The object of the game of golf is to get the ball from the tee to the hole, in as few a number of shots as possible, using the golf clubs to control the direction and distance in which the ball travels. So, the golfer’s aim with each shot is to progress the ball towards the hole, nothing more than that. It is far too easy to think that the goal is to have a perfect swing…each budding golfer will develop their own unique swing, with the help of guidance from their teacher AND through their OWN EXPERIENCE.

So the number one focus for every shot is to select a specific target and hit the ball towards it. For the golf ball to go in the right direction, the club head will need to hit the ball square, and the ball flight will tell you whether or not this has happened, and every golfer can learn from their awareness of the ball flight and can then adjust their swing so that they do hit the ball square. This is the second important focus.

These are the two most important things to do in golf – pick a target and aim at it, and be aware of the position of the club head when it connects with the ball. A baby doesn’t try to walk exactly like the adults in the house – he plainly cannot do that, he learns to walk in his own unique way. A child learns through their own experience, and through guidance. Every would-be golfer is a unique individual – having their own unique body and mind, and they will learn to play golf within this framework.

So long as thoughts are kept simple and clear, an individual will find it easy and fun to learn to play golf, so that they can truly enjoy the experience, without fear, and without getting tied up in knots.

And this is true of golfers of every handicap. The majority of golfers will relate to having experienced, at some time or another, a complete lack of confidence and loss of trust in their game. They grip the club and it just doesn’t look right, it doesn’t feel right…and they have no idea why this is the case. In the main this is due to lack of awareness of the basics of the game, a misdirection of focus. They are focusing on how to get a perfect angle at the top of the back swing, or keeping their wrists firm, or making sure their back is at the optimal angle, and so on. They’ve forgotten to focus on the ball and hitting it forward towards a target with a square club face, and this is basic to any successful shot (unless you are intentionally creating side spin so as to shape the ball flight).

And so the inevitable happens, the golf shot is less than perfect, and confidence dips lower, the club is gripped harder and more focus is given once again to the other mechanical things…and a cycle of negative effect can easily occur. This is why I began this article by saying that golf can be a really tricky game to learn. It is like no other game, and learning to play golf well poses an interesting mental and physical challenge to those who care to do so.

Keeping Your Confidence High Whilst Learning to Play Golf – Part 2

July 17, 2009 by admin

Yes, there are easier and there are more difficult ways of creating a great shot. Yes, there is an optimal technique. BUT ONLY IF YOU HAVE CONFIDENCE IN IT. As Henry Ford said “If you think you can or you think you can’t you are probably right”. The moral of this story is that if you feel that you have over-dosed on technique to the degree that your confidence has gone, take a sabbatical from technique and concentrate on simply hitting the ball towards your target, whilst keeping the club face square.

It’s amazing how frequently a golfer is not aware of ball flight and where the club face was at impact in order to have created a particular shot. And any golfer, just by becoming aware of how side spin is created, has the power to change what they are doing and truly take control of the club, and in this way they will RETAIN THEIR CONFIDENCE.

It is well known that children “have minds like sponges”, that they find it easier to learn and that it gets increasingly more difficult to learn as you get older. This is because up until the age of 7, during the imprinting period of development, the subconscious mind is completely open to suggestion. And from then to the age of 12, the modeling period, the conscious mind is forming, and after that the conscious mind filters everything before it is assimilated into the subconscious.

Trainee golfers may have beliefs about whether they are good or not at sport, or golf, or good or not at learning – but these are just beliefs, nothing more. There is no need to be held back by limiting beliefs. Everyone has the power to choose to change beliefs no matter how deep rooted they are. All individuals have a body and a mind which has a similar physiology and neurology as the best golfers in the world. Athletic literature is full of examples of athletes who have excelled because of their internal desire, rather than the physical attributes such as size, strength, power or speed. There are tall golfers and short golfers, male and female golfers, young and old golfers. It is not age or body shape which prescribes ability. It is your mind which makes the difference. What the mind can perceive, the mind can believe and the mind can achieve.

Everyone has the ability to play golf well. The most important thing for a golfer is to set your own goals, and enjoy your golf – it’s a game and golf should be fun.

Unfortunately many people overlook this fact, and allow worries and fears to get in their way. Fear is something which we learn through experience. Fear of embarrassment and fear of failure result in many adults not even attempting to learn a new task. Returning to the subject of children, we are not born with fear. Think about when a baby learns to walk. How many times does that baby teeter along and then fall, and then try again, and fall over again and try again, until eventually they can walk? If that child was worried about embarrassing him or herself, would they have learnt to walk? A baby will persevere time and time again, and has absolute trust that they will be able to learn that skill – otherwise they would not learn that skill.

The most important factor to grasp here is that what other people think doesn’t matter…but what you think does. And having confidence in what you are doing as you play golf will dictate the outcome of your shots.

2009 Golf Digest Hot List Winners Review

A Peek at the 2009 Golf Digest Hot List

Whether you’re a golf equipment fanatic or just a casual observer of the latest offerings and trends in golf clubs and accessories, the 2009 Golf Digest Hot List is a golf equipment smorgasbord. From drivers, fairway woods and hybrids, to irons, wedges and putters—oh, and bags and balls, too—the equipment gurus at Golf Digest break it down in their popular annual equipment ranking.

The Process

If you’re wondering how golf equipment experts rate, for example, Callaway drivers or TaylorMade irons, think Excel spreadsheets with thousands of data points, hundreds of pages of technical data from golf equipment manufacturers, scientists, a four-part judging criteria, and a two-week visit to a San Jose, California, resort for field testing.

The process is, in a word, exhaustive. Golf Digest evaluated the “universe” of golf clubs—471 entries, to be exact—and judged them across four weighted criteria: 1) performance (40%), 2) innovation (30%), 3) look/sound/feel (20%), and 4) demand (10%).

After all the facts and data were collected, the judges engaged in nine days of meetings that included 800 debates to arrive at the 116-club Hot List. Along the way, they ate a lot of take-out food.

Following is a peek at this year’s list.

Drivers

Golf Digest breaks down the golf drivers category into two parts: drivers over $350 and drivers under $350. Then it splits the two categories into gold and silver winners.

Three of the gold winners in the over $350 category are the Callaway FT-9, PING Rapture V2 and the TaylorMade r7 Limited.

No one is better than Callaway at using multiple materials, said the judges about the FT-9. Players like the look, balance and carry of the PING Rapture V2, which has a similar look to the PING G10. The TaylorMade r7 Limited has movable weights and features an Ozik shaft. Some said it produces the best feel of any club on the market.

Gold winners in the under $350 category included Adams Speedline, Callaway Big Bertha Diablo, PING G10 and TaylorMade Burner.

Irons

Irons were broken into three categories that correspond with playing ability and interests: game improvement, super game improvement and players irons.

Gold winners in the game-improvement category included Callaway X-22, PING G10 and TaylorMade Burner. One player said he could hit the Callaway X-22 irons blindfolded. Sign me up, he said. Callaway X-22 led in the Demand category, which is an assessment of reputation, interest, intrigue and excitement. The PING G10 is a long-time category leader, and the TaylorMade Burner irons really shined, leading in three of the four judging categories: performance, innovation and look/sound/feel.

TaylorMade also had a gold winner in the super game improvement category: the Burner Plus, which features an oversized clubhead and hefty offset to help get the golf ball in the air.

In the players irons category, Titleist AP2 rose to the top, along with TaylorMade Tour Preferred, Callaway X-22 Tour, Callaway X-Forged and PING S57 models, four among the total of six gold winners.

Putters

Arguably, there’s no golf club more important than the putter. Golf Digest took a close look at two main categories: blade putters and mallet putters.

Gold winners in the blade putter category over $200 included the Odyssey Black Series I #6, TaylorMade Daytona TP-KIA MA and Titleist Cameron Studio Select, which led in three of four criteria: performance, look/sound/feel and demand.

In the blade putter category under $200, top picks were the Odyssey White Hot Tour 1, two PING Anser models and the TaylorMade Daytona.

Gold winners in the mallet putter category included the Odyssey Black Series I 2-Ball, PING iWi Craz-E and TaylorMade Itsy Bitsy Spider. And leading mid-mallet putters were Odyssey, Titleist Cameron and MacGregor models.

Bags

Hot List judges took a look at lightweight carry bags and “do it all” cart bags, selecting their 21 favorites. Leading the list of gold and silver winners were models from Callaway, PING, TaylorMade, Titleist, Bag Boy, Nike, Ogio, Sun Mountain, Wilson and Izzo.

What do the top tour professionals play? Following is just a sampling.

Callaway: Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Annika Sorenstam
