The Analysis Of A Proper Golf Swing

Golfers like Tiger Woods are envied for their skill in the execution of the proper golf swing. The pure joy of watching them swing their clubs and sending the ball soaring up into the air and away over the fairway, knows no bounds. The proper golf swing can be called the Holy Grail of Golf. It is the proper golf swing that separates the chaff from the grain; the rookie from the veteran and the true golfer from the pseudo.

The popularity of golf throughout the world has spawned a number of books, golf swing instructions and DVDs aimed at improving the swinging ability of the golfer. Some people find these materials effective some do not. The principal reason behind the failure of most of these guides is the difference in the anatomy of every individual golfer. No two golfers are the same, neither are two golf swings. Some of the techniques in golf swing instruction guides simply will not work on some people because of their anatomy. And guides cannot be expected to address all anatomical differences.

For instance, the flexibility and agility of a slender golfer cannot be normally matched by the powerful swing of a stocky person and vice versa. The stocky golfer uses his broad shoulders to create the power to strike the ball to a far distance and this is matched by the legerity and the suppleness of the slender golfer to take his back swing far behind his back and thus give a longer downswing, which translates into the power required for hitting the ball.

The distance travel by the ball may be the same for each golfer, but the technique is as different as chalk and cheese. The techniques are different because the body structures are different.

A little bit of mathematics and physics could help you perceive the differences in the proper golf swing of each individual, the stocky and the slender golfer. Most professional golfer can attain a club head speed of about a hundred miles per hour (mph) – Tiger Woods is known to have hit 125 mph. – at the moment the clubface makes contact with the ball.

Tiger Woods is able to achieve this golf swing speed because he pivots far behind his back than most golfers can. The effect of the angular motion and the torque force on the club at the moment of impact has been studied in detail by physicists. They have found that velocity also has a telling effect on your proper golf swing. Practically all golf club heads have the same weight and to achieve distance the golfer has to hit the ball with the maximum force and this can be created only if the club head reaches the maximum velocity.

One of the most common mistakes that a novice at golf makes is to snap the wrist just before impact. It usually happens if the golfer is standing too close to the ball. This actually slows down the speed of the club, hence the force and translates into a lesser travel distance of the ball.

Mind your Language When Playing Golf! – PART 2

June 30, 2009 by admin

If you were standing with a bucket of balls on the range and you were aware that they were all going off to the right of your target, would you not try to correct that by aiming further left, altering your grip or whatever else, so as to give the ball a chance of reaching the correct target? And this, in essence, is all you have to do with your thoughts, all you have to do with your suggestions to yourself – just be mindful of the language you use.

This brings me to the fact that people are always happy to attempt to correct something physical, but where it is something mental, they often just give up and say “this is how I am”. Our minds aren’t static; they aren’t unchangeable, any more than your swing is. You can CHOOSE TO CHANGE YOUR THOUGHTS.

And as I have said on many earlier occasions, your thoughts create your emotions and direct your actions. Witness your body language when you say “I can’t…”, the way your body tenses up and you get jerky; whereas when you say to yourself “I can do this”, it is noticeable how fluid and rhythmic your body language is.

Which do you think would be the easier way of shaving 6 shots off your handicap? Spending an hour or so each day practicing you’re putting or choosing to believe that you can putt instead of suggesting to yourself that you can’t?

And then, once you have chosen to suggest to yourself that you can putt, you could decide to take the natural power of suggestion one step further, and shave even more shots off your handicap…Studies have decisively shown that the use of visualization in putting is actually more effective than real practice. This is FACT. And you have no doubt read the following Jack Nicklaus quote.

“I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a very sharp, in focus picture of it in my head. It’s like a color movie. First I see the ball where I want it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on bright green grass. Then the scene quickly changes and I see the ball going there: its path, trajectory and shape, even its behavior on landing. Then there is a sort of fade out and the next scene shows me making the kind of swing that will turn the previous images into reality.”

This is a perfect example of how you could choose to use suggestion on yourself. Jack clearly allows himself to see, hear and feel the shot he’s going to play before he plays it. He suggests to himself what he’s going to do, precisely and clearly, and then follows that suggestion. In effect, he allows himself the best opportunity to get the ball where he wants it to be. You’ll have noticed as well that this routine is one Jack employs both in competitions AND in practice. He wants to give EVERY shot the best chance of success, and so isn’t recording “misses” or “miss-hits” whilst in practice.

In the words of James Braid, “For practice to have full value make each swing with the care of a stroke from a tee on medal day”. In this way you are giving yourself the best opportunity to hit an optimal number of great shots and thus your mind is recording these “optimal” shots, thereby reinforcing your belief that you can hit that shot the way you want to.

So next time you are tempted to go to the range and hit 100 balls in quick succession, ask yourself will this be productive? Remember that your mind gathers information via your senses, and the senses used in playing golf are those of hearing, seeing and feeling. As you mind your language, you are hearing what you want to hear – “I can” rather than “I can’t”. As you practice productively, taking “the care of a stroke from a tee on medal day” you will be seeing what you want to see more often – great shots, and you will be feeling more consistently what a great shot feels like. And feel is so very important in golf.

In addition to having greater feel in the mechanics of your shots, you will be feeling more positive in yourself and having more fun. This, of course, is the aim of the game of golf. Having fun. To quote Tiger, “If you are not having fun playing this great game, do something to change your perspective. Having fun leads to great golf and vice versa. And don’t forget to take time to smell the roses along the way”.

As I asked in PART 1 of this article, why not change the suggestions which you are giving to yourself? You can learn how to change your habitual internal language with the help of hypnosis downloads. Why do you think the professionals use golf hypnosis? They use golf hypnosis because it works; hypnosis downloads can be used to get you to focus, to stay in the now, to see what you really want to see. With hypnosis downloads you can learn to access the more creative part of your mind and visualize your shots better. You can use golf hypnosis downloads to stop generalizing and to enjoy your golf a whole lot more than before, to have fun and to smell the roses along the way.

The Study Of A Bad Golf Swing To Acquiring A Proper Golf Swing

June 29, 2009 by admin

The most important thing that a golfer should acquire is a proper golf swing that is near perfect. It should be the endless effort of both veterans of the game and the novice to get a better swing at the next eighteen holes. The number of books on golf and the instructional videos available could confuse a beginner and no matter how many times or how many books you read or the DVDs you watch, they will be of no avail if the basics of the game, that remain the same for every golfer, is not properly understood and assimilated thoroughly.

The Set-Up

One of the things that makes a golf swing go off tangent is not the swing in itself but the set-up of the golfer. When we say set-up, we could refer to the golfer’s club, his accessories and clothes etc. It is the opinion of some golfers that a good set-up can offset a bad swing, which, of course, is patently incorrect. It does not matter if you have designer clubs, accessories and swank clothes or just off-the-rack clubs. It is the proper golf swing that is ultimately going to win you the game.

Spending too much time on set-up than on a game is a common mistake beginners tend to commit. Some golfers think that if they know all the technical names and terms of the game, they can just go about hitting the ball however they want. It may work for a film star in a film but it will not work for the average golfer and his bad swing.

But it is essential for you to keep in mind that when we talk about set-up we should mean the game and not the clubs, the accessories and the clothes of the golfer. It should pertain to the set-up of the golfer’s position, stance, balance etc. prior to the proper golf swing.

Bad Posture Can Destroy The Proper Golf Swing

If you are the kind of golfer that is not paying attention to the posture you adopt during a swing, then you should seriously think of chucking the game and taking up another. Golf is just not the game for you. You should know a good posture from a bad one and avoid the bad one. The key factor of a proper golf swing is the proper alignment of your head and your neck. This is the factor that is going to dictate the development of the force that will drive the ball and its flight. If you hunch over the ball, you will either hit it to the side or it will far short of the green than it should. It does not matter how hard you hit it.

Next comes balance. Not that it is in anyway inferior to posture. A good balance is required to deliver the required thrust to your swing. If you are unbalanced, you cannot hit the ball with the force that it should be struck with. If you have not perfected your stance, you will feel uneasy during play and the uneasiness will be obvious in your shot. Keep your footing on solid ground and keep it firm but not tensed up and heavy. Proper balance and posture can be cultivated by constant practice. It should become so ingrained into yourself that you should be taking up the correct position the moment you step up to tee off.

Chicken Wings

When we say chicken wings we do not mean the kind that we eat and relish. This variety can best be left at home or reserved for a victory dinner. It is the act of letting your arm and your wrist go limp when putting a ball that is known as a chicken wing. It is a bad habit and should be overcome by strict discipline and practice. If this limp action is allowed then your arm will fly up and all the power developed will get dissipated.

Golfers who do not pay the necessary attention to their swing tend to commit this so called chicken wings. Chopping or slicing will be the result of losing power and executing a chicken wing.

Learn the good aspects of the game and practice them to perfection. Learn the bad things about golf and strive to avoid them.

Making Golf Childs Play

June 28, 2009 by admin

In my last article post I finished with suggesting a mantra for life – what the mind can perceive, the mind can believe, and the mind can achieve. Have you noticed how true this is? What is in your mind, your thoughts, your memories, and the things you know to be “right” are simply your own perceptions of reality.

You and I could be standing at a junction and you see the traffic light is red and I see it to be green. It all depends upon the angle from which you are observing the lights. It depends on your perspective. You could, of course, choose to walk to the other side and view it from a different angle.

I would like you to take one minute now to carry out a simple task. Wherever you are at this moment in time, take one minute to look around you and notice, really notice, what around you is the colour blue. Notice as many things that you can that contain the color blue. Spend a full minute really noticing everything that is blue…and then read on.

Now, without looking around again, can you list what is the color red? This simple exercise should demonstrate what happens in everybody’s mind ALL of the time. Our observations and the judgments which we make of “reality” are shaped and colored by what we are focusing on, by what we expect to see or happen. Thus our perceptions are not only shaped by the angle of observation but also by our expectation, our underlying beliefs – we see what we expect to see. This is true of everything in life, not just golf. But in golf the effect is so very noticeable!

As Kendal McWade, the genius behind Instinctive Golf, states “Golf balls always do what they are told”. Now, if you are telling yourself that you are a bad putter, what are you telling the ball to do? Putting can so ably demonstrate the doubt and fear that holds us back in everyday life – emotions which can literally stop us in our tracks.

A child is not born with fear. We learn fear. Sometimes fear is a useful emotion and protects us from danger, but let’s face it, a putt shouldn’t be fearful. Even Tiger says that when he was a teenager he would hit the first putt so solidly that if it missed it might go five feet past the hole, and would simply rap it back into the hole without worry or fear…but that as he has got older he isn’t quite as fearless. Fears can creep into even the strongest of minds…if you allow them to do so.

So how do we remove fear when it’s not needed? How can we change state easily and quickly? Awareness is all important. Most of us are not really aware of the thoughts that are running through our minds. And yet your thoughts create your emotions and direct your actions (and the club and the ball). Let us try another exercise. Stop reading and spend the next minute just observing your thoughts. Notice just how many thoughts pass through your mind in one minute.

How many did you have? I bet there were quite a few. How many thoughts do you have in the very short time in which you swing a golf club? Or, more precicely, how many thoughts do you try to have whilst swinging the club? And how many thoughts run through your mind as you are setting up to the ball, be it for a tee shot or for a putt? Five, ten, fifteen?

Once you become aware of these myriad thoughts, it is easy to understand why the outcome of the shot can be unpredictable to say the least. All of those thoughts can be likened to ants running through your mind, each competing for your attention and focus, thereby taking your awareness away from what really matters – the ball and the target. These two things never change; or, at least, they shouldn’t change, assuming you have taken the time to select an exact target.

So the question is “how do we stop these ant-like thoughts from crawling all over our minds?” Cast your mind back to when you were a child and the answer should come to you quite easily. Children’s emotions change quick as a flash, crying one moment and laughing the next. They change state easily, quickly, INSTANTANEOUSLY; you and I were born with this ability; it’s an instinctive part of us. When a child falls over and scrapes their knees, they cry, and what does the parent do? The adult offers a sweet, they DISTRACT their attention away from the knees that are hurting.

The easiest way in which to displace a negative thought (or a selection of negative thoughts which are competing for your attention) is to give your mind something clear and precise to do. Give your mind something meaningful, interesting and relevant to do, something that is fascinating.

Fear is a function of either the past or the future. Fear does not exist if you are focusing on the now. Think about that for a moment. What are you afraid of on the golf course? The putt not rolling in? That’s in the future. The memory of the last shot sailing into the trees? That’s in the past. Making a fool of yourself? That’s in the future.

So when you are approaching a shot on the golf course, allow the “child” in you to surface – the part of you that’s fascinated, curious, the part of you that’s “in the now”. I was playing with a friend the other day and when we reached the green and saw where my ball was I said something to the effect of “oh, wow! This is an interesting one!” My playing partner’s response was “is that a new reframe for “Oh Hell?”!

Try it…and notice the effect. Because if you are “in the now” you will be aware of what you need to be aware of – the ball and the target. And if you are sizing up the situation with child-like wonder and fascination, you will be thinking “how can I get this in” or something to that effect, rather than being a puppet manipulated by A-N-Ts (Automatic Negative Thoughts).

Being “in the now” is a wonderful place to be. It allows you to be aware of what is really happening around you, to appreciate each moment for what it is. It allows you to notice when a rhododendron leaf glistens in the sunshine, or water sparkling as if thousands of stars are twinkling on its surface, and so on. It allows you to notice the feel of the fairway beneath your feet, the feel of the club in your hands, to notice the feel of your swing. (And wouldn’t greater feel come in handy?) Being in the now allows you to enjoy the time between shots, remaining relaxed and peaceful; it allows you to fully enjoy the game of golf, AND the game of life. If you aren’t in the now, you aren’t really living.

Another wonderful thing about being in the now is that you reap the rewards immediately – literally in the now. So many people say that it is impossible to change without hard work and effort. What can be hard about noticing what’s happening now? What can be hard when you are interested and curious and fascinated? When you are in the now, past beliefs cannot hold you back.

Are you ready to control your golfing destiny? Are you ready to make a commitment to yourself to play golf “in the now”? Are you willing to allow the natural instinct for wonder and fascination to come to the forefront of your mind? Are you ready to enjoy your golf and play better golf than ever before? Because you are the only person who can choose your thoughts. All you have to do is to choose to do so.

Three Tips For A Proper Golf Swing

June 26, 2009 by admin

Golf, undoubtedly, is a favourite sport; a reason why it is broadcast on TV. Your game may not be up to the level of Tiger Wood’s, but to become good at it, there are just three helpful golf swing tips to attain the proper golf swing.

The first one is that you should have a good shoulder turn to hit the ball dead centre and get it as close to the hole as possible. Easier said than done. Most people labor under the misconception that by lifting the heel high off the ground, they can do what is to be done in golf.

It boils down to this – turning of the hip is good as long as it does not create any recoil. The lesson to be learnt is not to turn much creating recoil – but not by how far the person turns when taking the shot.

The second lesson is not to let your chin rest on your chest. This will make it hard for the left arm to swing back when executing the backswing. You have to keep the chin up to allow the arm – the left one – to move across the chest unhindered. This will result in the formation of a wide arc that is required to strike the ball and send it off in the right direction.

The third lesson is to relax. If you are tensed up, you cannot think properly. If you do not think properly you will forget the two tips given previously resulting in a disruption of your rhythm. Consequently you will not strike the ball in the correct way.

To relax is a bit difficult when you are playing a real game of golf and want to win, but that is what separates the chaff from the grain – the boys from the men. Block everyone around you out of your mind, concentrate and imagine that you are in your “happy place”.

This is exactly what Adam Sandler’s character did in the film “Happy Gilmore” and won the game despite the odds.

Of course, you might not be able to master all the three tips overnight but by constant and regular practice you will soon get the essence of the advice. Jut keep in mind that professional golfers do not always win and that they also commit mistakes.

This thought should give you a good chance to win a competition, but you have nothing to lose because you are at a disadvantage and not expected to win. But the situation changes when you perform well throughout the tournament and everyone expects you to perform even better than you did.

When everything else fails, try to recall the third tip and relax. The difference between a win and a lose is nothing but attitude and relaxation is a kind of attitude. Continue your practice till you get the proper golf swing. Practice at home, in a range or out on a golf course.

The three tips given above are nothing but technique and attitude. The game starts from the moment you tee off. That is why your swing counts. If you get it right at the start, then the final putt, just a few yards from the hole will be relatively easier.

If you are really lucky, you might even do a “hole in one”, a rare occurrence and something that happens only once in a blue moon. But if you do, you have to move to the next hole, which might be more challenging than the one you just completed.

When you are out there on the course, success can be assured only if you follow the three tips outlined above.

A lot of golfers are very frustrated when it comes to a golf swing slice. Often they do not know why they are slicing a ball and how to stop this. Not to know how to fix and correct a golf swing slice is one point why the most golfers stay on their handicap and are not able to lower their scores.

If you want to better your game and your golf swing slice follow these simple tips outlined in this article.

One of the most common mistakes is a wrong stance. Your shoulders should be up and your feet as wide as your shoulder. Make sure you stay aligned to your ball. This is important to do a better swing. A good stance can make minor changes in your slice. I know it seems to be simple but in most cases the simple things are the ones that are overlooked.

Another great way on how to correct a slice is to ask a friend of yours to film you. This is one of my favourite tips and I bet it will help you to see what is going wrong with your swing. You can analyse your swing and see what to fix. And it is funny too. Golf has to be fun if you ask me and this simple training method is yet very effective. Every pro player is using this technique to improve their golf game.

The next part is the analysis of your video. Now you can see what you have to do to fix your golf swing slice. Move on and practice a proper swing at the golf range. You will see results when you know why you are slicing the ball.

Here are 2 bonus tips you can use today to fix a golf swing slice.

1. Set yourself a goal you want to reach. Maybe you want to lower your scores a few points in 1 month. Set your goal, but it has to be reachable! This is a mental aspect you have to keep in mind. As I mentioned mental golf fitness is important.

2. Keep your body in shape. Golf fitness and stretching before you start your game is essential. Physical fitness and mental fitness goes hand in hand. So, do not only play golf. Do some jogging or swimming to keep your body in balance. This will help you to better your golf swing!

Next you want to know what golf swing guides and videos are available to lower your scores and better your game. A good training program and the right drills are essential to take your game to the next level.

The Golf Swing Monitor

June 23, 2009 by admin

The police use a speed gun to check the speed of approaching vehicles and a similar one is used in baseball to clock the speed of the pitch. Not to be left behind, golf has the “golf swing launch monitor” to study the art of the swing.

The golf swing monitor is designed to tell a golfer a host of information which include: club speed, angle of launch, face impact position, ball speed, flight time, distance carried and yards off line. The information gathered can help the novice and even the avid golfer study the physics of his swing, correct the errors that he s committing and get the proper golf swing.

The machine analyses more than a hundred swings of the golfer to give its results. Both amateurs and professional can use this contraption to better their swing.

These machines are produced by a number of companies and you can get one at the nearest sports goods store.

Now that you have your golf swing monitor machine and the results of its analysis, what exactly does the information convey? Just numbers? No. If properly understood it can tell you whether your ball speed is proportionate to your club head speed. If not, then it means that you are not striking the ball dead centre with the flat face of the club. A ratio of 1:1.5 would be an ideal one. Simply stated, a club head speed of 100 mph. should make the ball travel at a speed of 150 mph.

You might think that getting this ratio is easy. Think again. Most professionals get nearer the ratio of 1:1.4. If yours are far off, you need, not only more practice but also a change in basic technique.

The next thing that you could watch out is the lunch angle. The higher the better, as this parameter determines the travel distance of the ball. Your backspin should be less. You may achieve a launch angle near the optimal angle of 12 degrees but if your backspin spins near the 5000-rpm (revolutions per minute) mark, what you are going to get is a pop-up. Tiger Woods launches at more than 11 degrees with a backspin rate of around 2,200 rpm.

The more costly the machine the more number of parameters it will measure and analyse. It also depends on the software that is doing the analysis of the data gathered by the machine. If you can hook it up to your PC or your laptop, all the better.

Achieving the right launch and angle requires technique. Supplement the results of the analysis by the golf swing monitor with good advice from a seasoned coach, practice in front of a mirror or take a video recording of your swing and watch it to be on your way to get the proper golf swing.

Will the golf swing monitor help improve your game? If used properly, a definite yes. So you can think of getting one if all other golf swing instructions fail to improve your game.

Years ago there was no hardware or software to analyse your golf swing. We should be glad that such training aids are now available to improve your game and attain the proper golf swing. There is no more guessing involved, everything is down in numbers and numbers speak volumes.

The Simple Golf Swing

June 20, 2009 by admin

The concept of the game of golf is quite simple. Hit a ball as near as possible to a hole at a far side and then put it into a hole. But when you actually try to do it, you find that is it not as simple as it seems. Just about twenty percent of golf players achieve this goal with the minimum of strokes and this is due to the inconsistency of their swings. Getting over your problems shouldn’t be very difficult; all you need is consistency.

When your game play technique becomes consistent, you begin to hit the ball squarely and consistently. You get the ball to travel longer distances and reduce 7 to 10 more strokes. Keeping to a simple swing helps you get consistency. A simple swing is one where there is little or no unnecessary movement and one that is always easy to do. Keeping things simple is the best way to get anything done successfully.

Your Spine. One of the best-kept secrets to a proper golf swing is to have a stable spine. It acts as an axis for the rotation of your body. Golfers having a high handicap also have unnecessary movements, rocking or swaying as they swing, leading to a lot of waste of energy and loose focus on the ball. To minimize swaying, think about coiling around your spine and limiting hip movements. This will enable you to put power into your swings.

Limiting Hip Rotation. By keeping your spine stable you can limit the rotation of your hip. Boxing requires good hip rotation but golf is just the opposite. Hip rotation is bad for golf. It causes a swaying movement that makes the swing ineffective. By rotating around your spine you can take the movement out of your hips.

The Backswing. Crucial to a proper golf swing is power. The backswing should be enough as though you have coiled yourself around your spine. Too far a back swing is also not effective.

The above are the three basic principles of golf that you have to remember at all times, i.e., keep a stable spine to pivot around, reduce the rotation of your hip and shorten your backswing but not too short. These basic principles will help you in your goal to a proper golf swing.

What you have to keep in mind is that the proper golf swing that most effectively strikes the ball has very little movement to it. This is the principle professional golfers understand and that is why they are successful. Instead of a complicated swing, theirs is simple, consistent and effective. The more simpler your swing the more consistent it will be.

Whatever the playing condition, easy or harsh and nerve-racking, golfers with a simple swing excel. In the parlance of some golfers, your body “becomes” the proper golf swing by long and hard training. It is effortless, consistent and effective. And as you achieve this proper golf swing your confidence also increases and consequently your game.

Your confidence in yourself will let you play without being distracted even in tournaments, where other players wilt under the pressure. Once you get the proper golf swing and the confidence that you can consistently swing, all you have to do is mentally tune up your game.

Recession Proof Activities and Businesses

Since the 1920’s few business sectors can claim to be recession proof but it’s clear that in the new millennium many business have proven to be able to weather a recession if not be recession proof. Hollywood has always been one of these businesses. In the 70’s when gas was through the roof and we were in a recession Hollywood actually saw an increase in movie revenue. The price was always right for a family struggling to pay the bills and ninety-minute movie always served as a mental break from the daily grind that weighed so heavily on people’s minds. Although the price of a movie has risen a lot since the 70’s (along with gas prices) it’s clear to see that Hollywood is still proving to be protected from the recessionary woes that many people find themselves in.

When people find it hard to get from paycheck to paycheck they look for avenues to relax. Many men and women alike find that taking up sports like flag football, softball and golf offer relief from their daily stress with minimal investment. Swinging those golf clubs help to melt away those work related frustrations that keep their stomachs in knots all week long.

As technology advances we are finding new recession proof industries. Another recession resistant business has been the world of wireless communication. Although the same can’t be said for landline services, the wireless mobile phone industry has been booming and even hiring new employees when most every other company has been completing mass layoffs. When it comes to communication people need to be on the go more now then ever. As many people look to take on a second job or have a new family member out in the work force the wireless industry has backed into a recession proof parking spot that seems to be quite secure; at least this time around.

With cities like Las Vegas feeling the pinch of the economy many smaller vacation spots are actually seeing an increase in revenue. People are choosing to forgo the larger vacations like Disney World in favor of smaller destinations closer to home. For some this is a necessary adjustment to their usual plans but the end result is a smaller stream of revenue that has been given to those businesses that would otherwise be overlooked for the larger more popular destinations.

As with all recessions we will overcome and move to more prosperous times again but there is a lot to be learned from times like these. Look to those companies who can survive the worst of times and look to the bonding that happens when a recession occurs. Most of the items discussed above spur social interaction, which is the key to happiness. So this goes to show that money isn’t the root of happiness.
