1. Keep each shot in perspective. This is especially true in a 108-hole tournament. Q-School, of all tournaments, is understood to be a marathon and not a sprint. There is no rational reason to be unnerved by a bad hole or two. Similarly, the junior golfer has years and years of opportunities ahead. There is no particular shot in any tournament that is .life or death..

2. Focus on the task rather than the outcome. This is probably the most difficult of the basics for players to follow. It is natural to think about the result and then the consequences of the result. This thinking will not help get the job done. Whenever these thoughts come to mind, replace them with thoughts of the immediate task at hand.

3. Breathe. Even the best in the world get tense in this type of situation. That tension can increase a player’s tendency to hold his breath in anticipation of a shot or a putt. This then impacts muscle tension even more, and potentially affects his ability to swing the club smoothly. Deep breaths = slower heart rate and less physiological tension. Creating a habit of doing this as a junior player will be invaluable as your golf career progresses.

4. Remember that you cannot control things. Anyone who plays this game knows that something unexpected happens in nearly every round. A great tee shot lands in a divot, a club you.ve been hitting well all week suddenly starts getting shaky, or a two-foot putt is missed. The successful players in Q-School and elsewhere will recognize that they have control only over their preparation and reactions, and not over anything else. If they know they.ve prepared the best they could for each shot, and know that they are capable of controlling their reaction after each shot, they.ve done all they can possibly do to achieve their goals. Move on to the next one.

5. Play to succeed. Nearly every year there is a player or two held up at the end of Q-School as an example of a late tournament collapse. In nearly all of those instances, the player interviewed will speak of having thoughts of trying to hold on or trying not to make a big number. Many players will have a tendency to play to avoid mistakes and/or prevent something bad from happening. The players who are successful are those who are confident in their abilities to go out and get the job done, and will be playing to succeed rather than to avert failure.

Record Breaker: Brian Gay Dominates the Verizon Heritage

In a stunning show of skill, Brian Gay dominated the Verizon Heritage with an astonishing 10-stroke lead. Gay has twice narrowly missed an invitation to the Masters; with this win, however, Gay need wait only another 50 weeks until he competes in the 2010 Masters.                      

Gay has shown steady improvement over the course of his 11 full PGA tours. Last year, he won his first career victory at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, along with more than $2.2 million in earnings – a personal high. This year, he has made 10 of 11 cuts, six of which were top-25 finishes, and three of which were top-10. This year’s victory is the second in his career, and marked his 330th career start on the PGA tour.          

The last player to win a PGA Tour event in the double-digits was Phil Mickelson, who steamrolled the 2006 BellSouth Classic by 13. (Mickelson, by the way, went on to gain his second green jacket at the Augusta Masters one week later.)

Gay’s double-digit lead is the ninth in the tour’s recorded history, tabulated since 1970 when record-keeping began.

The course, Harbour Town, is ranked as the second most-difficult course this year, with players hitting just 57.1 percent of the greens. The most difficult course is Bay Hill, where players hit an average of 55 percent. Both rank well below the 2009 tour average of almost 67 percent.

Despite the difficulty, Gay played the best game in his career, dominating all four days of the event and astounding spectators with his top-notch performance.

In the front nine, Gay launched his winning streak when he pushed in first an 18-foot birdie on the par-3 4th hole, and then a 25-foot birdie on the next hole. He hit a third straight birdie as he approached from a fairway bunker, another at less than 10 feet inside the 7th, and yet a fifth with a 20-foot putt, reaching 10 under. 

He finally settled for a par on the ninth hole. 

In all, Gay made six birdies on the front nine, five of which occurred consecutively from the fourth to the ninth holes, giving him a 66 and a one-stroke lead over former British Open champion Todd Hamilton.

Gay’s only bogey occurred at the tenth hole, after which he parred in to keep the lead. 

Gay’s competition at Harbour Town was strong but not exceptional. Many of golf’s top ranked players, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and last week’s Masters winner Angel Cabrera, took the week off to recuperate from the Augusta Masters. Of the top 20 players in the world, just six attended Harbour Town. Nevertheless, Gay offered a stellar performance on par with that of golf’s greatest players. 

Gay finished the tournament with a game that seemed to have broken records all over the place. At 20-under 264, his winning score broke the previous scoring record at the Verizon Heritage of 19-under 265, set by Loren Roberts in 1996.

The 10-stroke win margin is also a tournament best, topping Davis Love III’s 7-stroke lead in 1998. Gay won the Verizon Heritage with the largest margin of victory in the event’s history.          

At 83.9 percent, Gay was second in driving accuracy; first was Tim Wilkinson with 89.3 percent. At 66.7 percent, he was T-3 in greens in regulation. He was also T-3 in putts-per-round at 25.25, and with 1.604, third in putting average.

Most impressive, though, was the fact that Gay made only two bogeys for the week. This is the fewest number of bogeys at the Verizon Heritage since 1983, when the organization began to keep scoring records. Gay’s ratio of birdies or better to bogeys or worse was 10.5 to 1; the same ratio for the runners up centered around 2.2 to 1. 

With such a flawless performance, Gay more than earned his invitation to next year’s Masters.

The Augusta Masters: Perry Melts and Cabrera Putts his Way to the Jacket

After 41 years, Argentina has finally redeemed itself in golf. In 1968, the Argentine golfer Roberto De Vincenzo signed off a wrong score on his scorecard, missing an opportunity to enter the playoffs and win the green jacket, the traditional prize at the Masters. In 2009, another Argentine, Angel Cabrera, defeated Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell in a three-way, two-hole playoff, a last spectacle in the already-electric Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club.

Initially, the final players received little attention; the crowd focused on an epic playoff between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the number 1 and number 2 players in the world, respectively. It was their first game in 8 years. Amidst the frenzied cheers of the crowd, the two players moved up the leaderboard—Mickelson began hitting birdie after birdie, and Woods, after a shaky start, made eagle on the par-5 eighth. The crowd remained with the two even while the tournament’s final contenders played for the jacket. In the end, Woods finished with two bogeys and left at 8-under, some four strokes behind the three leaders – Cabrera, Perry, and Campbell. Mickelson finished at 9-under.

The day may have belonged to Woods and Mickelson, but the evening would belong to the final contenders in the playoffs. Perry was ready to make a bid as the oldest winner of a major. He went 22 consecutive holes without a bogey, leaving him with a 2-shot lead and two holes to play. He seemed primed to slip into the green jacket, but when his last two shots bogeyed, he was forced into a three-way playoff with Cabrera and Campbell.

As the sun retreated, the crowd surged toward the last three players. The roars were deafening. Cabrera’s first playoff tee landed behind a tree, and when he tried to hit through an opening in the trees, his ball careened onto the fairway. When Campbell was eliminated for bogeying at the first playoff hole, Cabrera was left to contend with Perry. Cabrera seemed an unlikely winner, but at the second hole, the game shifted direction. With mud on his ball, Perry shot left and made a bogey. Cabrera only needed to make a routine par to win the Masters. Cabrera made it to the green, and two putts later, the jacket was his.

For Perry, Sunday’s Masters represented a second loss in a major.

For Cabrera, however, the Masters represented a second win in a major. At number 69 in the world, he is the lowest ranked player to have won a Masters.

“When they put the green jacket on I had goose bumps,” Cabrera explained through an interpreter. “I was shaking. I can’t even explain what was going through my body.”

“It’s the dream of any golfer to win the Masters. I’m so emotional I can barely talk.”

Though perhaps not quite as memorable, Cabrera’s words were a nice change from De Vincenzo’s infamous “I am a stupid” in 1968. (De Vincenzo was, in fact, among the first to call Cabrera after his victory to congratulate him.)

For Argentina, Cabrera’s words represented redemption; for the Masters, Cabrera, along with the others at this golf spectacle, infused much-needed energy in the usually sedate golf tournaments.
